Thyroid Answers Podcast #27: Discussion with Alessandro Ferretti on weight loss, the ketogenic diet and Hypothyroidism
Drs. Eric Balcavage and Erica Riggleman interview Alessandro Ferretti. He is a well respected nutritionist, researcher, and expert in the ketogenic diet and ketogenic lifestyle.
Alex lives deep in the English countryside so internet connection was a challenge on this podcast. But, if you can put up with a little sketchy audio at times there is a wealth of great content in this podcast.
Alex explains why the “eat less and exercise more” does not work for many people and especially those with hypothyroidism. We go into some detail on why those with hypothyroidism struggle to burn fat and lose weight.
We clean up the myth that fat is bad and makes you fat. We discuss the ketogenic diet and some of the misunderstandings around a ketogenic diet and a ketogenic lifestyle. There is also an explanation of why going for ketogenic for some does not seem to work and why it may actually make them feel worse.
Alessandro Ferretti’s Bio:
“I graduated from the Institute of Optimum Nutrition in 2001 and formed Equilibria Health Ltd with my partner Jules in 2004. With a growing team of Nutritionists and a Medical Doctor, Equilibria Health is now recognized as one of the UK’s leading providers of nutrition education.
I deliver an annual series of UK wide practitioner and medical professionals postgraduate seminars, workshops & masterclasses metabolism, health and performance, and nutrigenomic. In addition, Equilibria Health Ltd also instigated an ambitious programme of clinical workshops which has been consistently well received. Over recent years, I have received two nominations for CAM Best Practice Award for clinical excellence.
I am inspired by seeing people find their niche in life, so several years ago I developed a mentoring arm to the Equilibria business. Providing support for recent graduates and practitioners to help them to achieve their potential, I spend 1:1 time with clients using a variety of techniques to help them to find direction and success in their chosen career.
Past work included practice from the Centre for Health and Human Performance (CHHP) at 76 Harley Street, London, and at Tudor Medical Centre, in Stratford Upon Avon.
In recent years I have become fascinated by the potential of nutrigenomics, HRV, metabolism and actively research impact of food and environment in performance and health. My most recent focus is studying the relationship between HRV and blood glucose levels. I have very recently developed a model to asses athletes health looking at data analysis and metabolic behaviour for long term health.
I have worked with Ben Lynch and the Seeking Health Educational Institute. I’ve worked with or been featured on podcasts with Mike Mutzel, FirstBeat Optima Health, Metabolic Mastery, OFM, iThlete, EliteHRV, Paul Burgess Athletic Fitness, and Sigma Nutrition. I’ve also collaborated with Dr Justin Roberts of Anglian University, Dr Daniel Plews, and Dr Paul Larsen in 3 scientific papers in sport performance, and many more.
I live in the countryside at the edge of the Cotswolds close to Stratford Upon Avon with my partner Jules, son Milo and dogs Albi and Pepe.
I practiced judo at Coventry Judo club, currently practicing karate at CKMA and cycle around the beautiful country lanes surrounding my home at the edge of the Cotswolds.”
